Wii Fit preorders through the roof in Britain

Having already whipped Japanese consumers into lean, mean killing spending machines, Wii Fit debuts in the west later this month, when it hits Europe on April 25th. And, unsurprisingly enough, its impact is already being felt in the region, with Jersey-based UK retailer Play.com reporting that it sold through its entire allocation of preorders for the game in just one day, a company record.

"Wii Fit is going to be huge. Let's hope that we can keep up with demand." panted Play.com head of games Gian Luzo as he waded through his home, waist-deep in banknotes, before subtly hinting: "We are expecting more stock before launch." You've been warned, Brits: if you want the wobbly slab from day one, get those preorders in, pronto.

Mario Kart VW Beetle sadly lacks shell-dispensing ability

Forget Swarovski-slathered Wiis -- UK retailer GAME has just absolutely trumped every other Nintendo prize in history by offering up this totally dorky/awesome Mario Kart-themed Volkswagen Beetle in a forthcoming Mario Kart Wii competition. All you have to do is pop along to one of the thirty participating UK stores on April 5th and get the fastest lap in the country. Easy!

There are tons of other prizes on offer, not to mention the chance to play Mario Kart Wii a whole week early, but we've got our eyes set firmly on the car. It's probably not the kind of thing for anybody wishing to attract the opposite sex, but who cares? They're not the ones with a damn Mario Kart Beetle.

Queen Elizabeth II on Wii: One approves

We always suspected that the Wii, much like the toilet, could be a great social leveller. After all, no matter how blue your blood, anybody is going to look like a bit of a plum playing Wii Sports. Obviously, that doesn't remotely faze us (we're not very cool people anyway), it shouldn't faze you, and it certainly doesn't faze Queen Elizabeth II.

Yeah, you heard us: according to British red-top The People, Her Maj is the latest fan of Nintendo's console, and something of a pro at Wii bowling. The monarch discovered the Wii after her grandson, the prematurely balding Prince William, received one of the rare consoles as a Christmas gift from his girlfriend. We actually really love the mental image this story conjures up: the 81-year-old Queen swinging blissfully away while being watched by Wills, Harry, Phillip, several corgis, and various Royal Family underlings, and then getting roundly applauded for knocking down a single pin.

Seriously though, ma'am, it's good to know you're having fun with our taxes your new console. Welcome aboard!

January sales ahoy! A trio of Wii bargains for Brits

Got your new Wii set up, UK gamers? Congrats! Now all you need to do is treat it correctly grab some games for the lil' guy, and with the January sales kicking off today, finding bargains shouldn't be too taxing. GAME has just announced the contents of its sale, and as usual it's a matter of carefully locating the gems lost in a vast ocean of crappy shovelware. We took some time out to sift through the trash and found three sparkling additions for your library:
Admittedly, thirty quid for the charming Eledees is still a little steep, but Mercury Meltdown Revolution for £17.99 is an absolute snip.

Wii surpasses Xbox 360 in UK

According to the sales data from Chart-Track (your friendly neighborhood UK chart compiler), the Wii's total hardware sales surpassed those of the Xbox 360 in the land of Great Britain. Wait, the Xbox 360 was on the market for an entire year before the Wii, you say? It ain't no thang. Nothing can keep that little white console down.

Chart-Track declined to release the total sales numbers of each console, due to corporate policy. The charts did reveal, however, that 100,000 Wii units were sold in the UK last week. That may not be enough to meet demand, but still shows that Nintendo is supplying a good amount of consoles to the region.

British retailers going bundle crazy

Over at the always entertaining UK: Resistance, resident jaded cynic Cmdr_Zorg has a few strong words to say about certain UK retailers, specifically those who refuse to play fair when it comes to the increasingly rare Wii.

The source of Zorg's chagrin? That said merchants are now using the insane popularity of the Wii and crippling shortages to flog desperate consumers bundles which are, to put it charitably, a load of old bumwash. Electronics chain Dixons is one of the culprits in this growing trend, with its cheapest Wii bundle clocking in at £350 ($725). All have sold out, presumably to people who would normally have lol'd heartily at the idea of buying Smarty Pants.

Admittedly, some of the bundles being offered by Dixons contain titles that every one of us should own, but that's not the point: let us make those decisions!

Brits can't find Wii for love nor money

Nintendo might well be cracking the whip on the Wii production line, but pretty much everybody still seems to be feeling the pinch of shortages. UK shoppers, for example, are becoming increasingly desperate for the console, with online retailers now getting in the region of 100,000 requests a day from panicky, possibly hyperventilating Brits.

Meanwhile, Amazon's UK arm recently sold 1,000 machines in under 10 minutes, while the console on its own is typically going for around £300 ($615) on eBay. In other words, Wii fever is hitting some quite ridiculous heights on this side of the pond, and if Reggie is to be believed, things ain't going to get any better in the immediate future.
