Wiicade develops Wiimote API for Flash [update 1]

We get the feeling that the Wii browser game scene is about to get awesome, thanks to Wiicade, who were already agents of Wii browser awesomeness. Their new Application Programmer Interface allows Flash developers to easily make use of every button on the Wiimote in their Flash games, even allowing multiple simultaneous button presses while the pointer is in use.

In addition, Wiimote buttons can be mapped to keyboard keys, for PC-based testing and play. We're a little bit interested in the possible Flash-based applications that a simple API will encourage, but we're about the games!

What existing Flash games would you like to see ported to the Wii? What new homebrew opportunities do you see opening up here? Either tell us in the comments or get started!

[Update 1: the Wiicade API folks updated their example image for proper button placement, and we have updated accordingly.]

New console with some old school flavor

We're really at a loss for words (GASP) at the sight of the Wiicade cabinet, as we silently soak in the beautiful contour of its design and thoughts of building one ourselves dance in our heads. Then we remember that we have neither the time or skill with power tools it would take to craft one.

Play homebrew Flash games on the Wii [update 1]

Parallel to the long-awaited launch of the Wii, designer David Stubbs, Aaron Worrall and John Eysman have launched their website, called Wiicade. The first homebrew application we have seen so far for Wii, Wiicade offers gamers a chance to play and possibly create Flash games to be played through the Opera browser.

We poked around the site to discover it an instant success. Since the site launch on Sunday, over 16,000 games were played in under 24 hours. Wiicade costs nothing to you and we hope to see more games inspired by the Wiimote appear. If you, like several other disspointed Nintendo fanboys and girls, didn't get your hands on a Wii, you can still enjoy these games on your PC to hold you over.

[Update: Remember that these games are not yet available for actual play on the Wii because the Opera Browser is not yet live.]
