Top 5: Nintendo on YouTube

When describing people like us, the media tends to churn out some pretty hideous labels. One of the more sickening terms is "the YouTube Generation." As though our entire existence revolves around Miss Teen South Carolina and Rickrolling. Though the generalization is annoying, one does have to concede that the video-hosting website has a fairly large effect on our society. Coupled with the fact that many people carry phones with the ability to record video, the public is now a walking telescreen whose surveillance potential would make Big Brother blush. Particularly in the heat of a presidential election, Senators Obama and McCain have to keep on constant alert for that all-powerful snafu. One slip of the tongue and they may find themselves having their own macaca moment.

Privacy issues aside, YouTube is a great place to take the pulse of a culture. Just type in a subject, and instantly you're provided with news stories, film and television references, artistic responses, editorial presentations, and individual observations. Given the gaming community's incredibly strong presence online, YouTube is packed with videos of/for/about gamers. As to be expected, there are hundreds of thousands of videos inspired by or based on Nintendo's history. Indeed, a simple search for the word "Nintendo" yields about a half a million results. Aside from the usual dead horse-beating of people acting out "Mario in the real world!" (OH WOW LOOK HE WENT DOWN A PIPE JUST LIKE MARIO DOES), there's a wealth of quality Nintendo-related videos that all should experience. Here is our top five.

5. Zelda Rap - There are embarrassing memories that, despite all best efforts to forget, will replay in one's mind until the brain isn't supplied with oxygen anymore. Eventually, however, the awful moments can desensitize the public such that the original matter loses its acidity. It's similar to a hot fudge sundae-induced brain freeze. At first, it's shocking and awful. But then you start to grow used to it, and before long you're dying for one due to its association with ice cream heaven. This basic principle applies to Nintendo's 1986 "Zelda Rap" commercial. As a couple of kids are sitting on a couch, the nerdier of the two asks, "Did you see the latest Nintendo newsletter?" (I've always loved how commercials choose to ignore the way people actually talk) While one might expect an immediate wincing reaction to the crispy freestyle that follows, the more common response is similar to a post-Jim Norton joke: "wow, he really went there ... like, all the way there without looking back." A week after viewing, you may find yourself reciting your own NES-influenced rhymes.

Friday Video: In defense

If there's one thing you've gotta love about YouTube, it's video warzzzz. And, of course, one of the most popular subjects is one near and dear to our own hearts -- the never-ending debate about which console is best. Because, y'know, we can't just let people have their tastes or anything like that; someone's always got to speak out about how everything that isn't their chosen thing sucks. And then someone responds. It's the circle of video.

We may make fun, but at its heart, this video in defense of the Wii is worth a watch (though we must warn that it's NSFW and RebornZilla's mum may wash his little mouth out eventually). Once you get through the name-calling, there are some good points made, including many we agree with. Hey, we're fanboys, too ... and big fans of reason as well.

And, hey, no one's above a little occasional name-calling. It makes life fun!

Symantec demonstrates the Internet channel 'hack'

We were a little worried that nobody would consider the Internet Channel a fully-featured Web browser unless it crashed all the time. Some jerks on YouTube are working right now to make that happen!

Symantec has posted an explanation of the recent Wii security issue, which, as far as security goes, is a non-issue. You can also see it in "action" after the break! Basically, people can post hacked YouTube videos that freeze browsers. This affects any system that can run Flash, the Wii included. An exploit that takes advantage of this hack has already been devised for Windows, but other Flash-capable systems are safe right now. Yes, this means no homebrew code yet, but it also means that some dude isn't ... uh, stealing your Miis? What would someone even do to a Wii?

[Thanks, Almadi!]

Harry Potter and the Order of the Dweebs

Not a day passes without some poor sap's waggling image being posted on Flickr or YouTube, their awkwardness immortalized for the world to see. Today's Penny Arcade comic is a cautionary tale for all the gamers out there who lose themselves in the Wii's heightened brand of immersion, flapping their hands and dressing in costume for that authentic experience.

With Harry Potter mania being at an all time high -- several video games, a new movie, and the final book all within a few weeks' reach -- we're at our most vulnerable. Guarding ourselves against these embarrassing exposures should be priority one. Remember that the next time you start riding your mother's broom during a mock Quidditch match and notice a red light blinking in one of the room's air vents.

Stream iTunes to your Wii

RSS iss some funny acronym, I think.
As the console is generally hooked up to a far larger sound system than the computer, it generally behooves the player to make use of a system as a music- or movie-playing device. We admit, the 360's streaming capabilities put it in a class of its own, but the Wii's easy-to-use internet browser has landed it at the center of many a drunk YouTube gathering. We'd previously reported on the success of Last.fm on the Wii, but now you can get your own music collection playing through your five point one, via iTunes.

The process is a bit lengthy, but it's very step-by-step. Would any readers like to test this out for us? It's kinda early, and there are gentle hobos living in the attic; we don't want to wake them, you see.

Wii Warm Up: The Wii effect

Will the Wii help move the internet into the living room? Some people think that Nintendo's sleek new system might just succeed at what Microsoft has been hoping to do since day one: turn the home gaming console into a media center, and thus move our multimedia experience to the sofa. The combination of the Opera browser and the Wii remote makes couch-surfing (pun intended) stupidly easy. No, you're not going to transcribe War and Peace without a keyboard, but for anyone used to text messaging, the interface and predictive text make typing far easier than we might have expected.

You guys may not have been 100% in love with the Wii browser, but one comment from yesterday's discussion really stood out: the ease of watching videos, despite some limitations with the browser and Flash support. Forget what we can't do right now; that can always be changed. Think instead about the ease of watching YouTube from the sofa with a remote control. Once again, these aspects of the Wii aren't really about us (though we can certainly reap the benefits along with everyone else). We're not going to buy a console just to browse the internet or play tennis; we're interested in lots of games on our consoles, and we have phones and handhelds and computers with which we can trade cat pictures and the always-hilarious head of Leonidas. This is about the people who never even noticed the game consoles before. It's about that 30% of households predicted to own a Wii by 2011. The Wii remote puts all of what we take for granted quite literally in the palm of their hands, and because of that, it really could change the face of the internet. Browsing from the sofa is a different experience, after all.

We'll wait and see ... but it's plausible, don't you think? Where do you see the web in three years?

Wiitube wants to give you a copy of TMNT

And who are we to deny them that right? If you're at all interested in a free Wii game, all you have to do is create an avatar and upload a video to Wiitube, and you'll be entered into the contest. That doesn't seem so painful. The dramatic quality of your video doesn't seem to be a factor, so you can always take the easy way out and just read some blog posts out loud (with proper attribution, of course).

We want to go on record as encouraging "giving people video games" as a Web 2.0 trend. We'd gladly trade Myspace for free video games.

Impressive Wii Sports: Bowling power throw demonstration

For the uninformed, the power throw mini-game is a challenge set in Wii Sports: Bowling where the player must go through ten frames of action where the number of pins steadily increases from ten in the first frame, to a gigantic 91 pins in frame ten. This means that, given consecutive strikes, the top score possible is 890 pins. The embedded video, available past the post break, shows You Tube user DarkPlayer1988 getting to 804 pins, just a mere 86 pins away from mini-game perfection.

Have you achieved perfection in this mini-game? Take a picture or, even better, some video and let us know! We're always on the look-out for this kind of stuff.

Tiny hotness: playing the Wii on a GBA SP (update 1)

In using a special cartridge that allows a video signal to be sent to the GBA, You Tube user jackal27 rocks his Wii on the portable's tiny screen. Obviously, the practical use of such a feature is almost nonexistent, but it makes for a fun little You Tube video. Check out the video, which has been embedded past the post break.

Update: me am not so English good (I omitted a word or two in the post).

SofaTube - Not a cylindrical couch

Convenient!
The defining use for the Wii Opera browser, is, of course, watching all the insanity of YouTube on your fancy-big TV. The site, however, is not quite conducive to the low-resolution viewing conditions found on the Wii, and is thus rather inconvenient to browse effectively.

Enter: SofaTube. A website dedicated to the perusing of not only YouTube but also the Revver library of videos, using a convenient drag-and-drop interface and large text for easy reading. So sit back, relax, and enjoy that Opie and Anthony video one more time ... it's that easy.

(That link involves some NSFW and rather gross comedy, though we can't seem to take our eyes off it. Click at your own risk.)

Don't you just hate it when ...

... you get beat by a little girl? No matter what game, or contest, it just hurts a man's pride. As well as it should, considering a majority of the day for a manly man (such as ourselves) is spent fighting cougars in the wilderness and growing beards of epic proportions. Only to come home and lose to a little girl in a game of Wii Sports: Boxing? Clearly, the man in the video, available past the jump, is not a manly man. Either that or Wii Sports: Boxing isn't as dependant upon a player's skill as we believed it to be, instead relying on who can mock punch the fastest and most.

Or maybe this guy is the dad and he let his daughter win? Personally, if we had kids (we can't, damn Joystiq for never taking these shackles off), we would do the same. But being the manly men we are, we'd have all boys ...

YouTube a no-go on Wii?

Lots of folks are reporting that YouTube videos no longer work on the Wii -- though they did last night, as most of our loving tipsters raved about the novelty of watching videos on their televisions. Some sites were even talking about it; it is, after all, convenient to check out everyone's favorite video hub from the couch. What happened between now and then?

Reports on exactly what is happening seem to differ -- some people get an error messages about the need to install a flash plugin, and others just get the page with the video that never loads, even when the page is refreshed. Google Video apparently has some limited functionality, but longer videos are reported to freeze the Wii. We're guessing that part of the problem is on YouTube's end, since the site has had some intermittent downtime today, but that doesn't explain the issues with Google Video, or why things were working and were suddenly broken. We're all down with the fact that Wii Opera is in beta, but we need our videos! We'll update here if we find anything else out.

[Thanks, David!]

A pair of new Twilight Princess videos

A duo of delicious videos for Twilight Princess have hit You Tube and, unless you're a fan of spoilers, we suggest you do not check the videos out, which are embedded into the post after the break. We'd discuss the videos' contents, but like we said ... spoilers.

Wii interface video shows the goods

IGN's resident Wii guy Matt C sat down and recorded himself running through the Wii's interface recently. Then one of IGN's subscribers did us all a favor and uploaded the video to You Tube so that we may see and let all those as enthusiastic about the Wii as we are know of its existence. So now that we have, stop reading and head further into the rabbit hole post and check the video out!

[Thanks Andrew and VerdigriS!]

More video than you can shake a Wiimote at

It's way too early for anything serious, so let's take a moment to goggle over the dedication of Turpentine, an admin at the Wii Fantastic forums. Turpentine put together a list of 35 different Wii videos from YouTube. It's enough to make us consider getting into voodoo if it'll get November 19 here any more quickly. While you've probably seen a lot of these videos before, it's nice to have so many on one page. It's convenient when that Wii crave starts kicking in.

[Thanks, flubba!]
